During the last 5-6 years the fjords and coastline outside and north of Tromsø, this has been an
arena for a spectacular meeting with some of the biggest whales in the sea. The two last years most of the whales has followed the herrings to an area 50 nm north of Tromsø - The Skjervøy area.

Orca, or the killer whale as it’s more commonly known as, travels every year a long
distance up to Troms to feed on the massive amounts of herrings we have in our
fjords.

During the 50’s and 60’s overfishing became a big problem and drove them away for many
years.

It’s not by accident that names of villages, islands and fjords has been given names in relation to this magnificent animal in the past at a time when nature was in balance.

Examples of these names are «Kvaløya» (Whale Island), «Kvalnes» (Whale Cape), “Kvalsundet” (WhaleStrait), and “Kvaløyvågen” (Whale Bay).

We are very delighted to see that nature is starting to become more in balance again, and
it’s great to witness the whales returning to our coastline.

The humpback whales that can way up to 40 ton and stretch as long as 15 meters, has
reveled in the massive amounts of herrings along our fjords.

Photo hunting these great animals often creates a memory for life for anyone lucky enough
to be a part of it.
There’s no guarantee that we’ll see the orcas and humpbacks at every excursion, that’s why the trip in
itself, the nature and the photo hunting is an important part of theexperience.

Tromsø is situated at approximately 70 degrees north and because of this it should
normally have a cold climate with icy fjords most of the year, but fortunately
that’s not the case.

The gulf current brings a temperate water all the way from the Mexico Gulf and run
upwards the Norwegian coastline. During the winter months the temperature in
the sea is mostly around 4 degrees Celsius.

There’s open water all year along the coastline, and there’s only a few fjord areas
during the winter months where you’ll find frozen water created by the
freshwater running out from the rivers.

This creates a unique opportunity for photo safaris most of the year, and in this
environment a varied amount of species thrives, both on land and in the sea.
Among them white-tailed eagles, auks, puffins, crutch birds, cormorants, seal,
humpback whales, mink whales and harbour porpoises.
